The World About Us

on BBC Two England

The Trouble with Evolution ...
Why have the crocodile, horseshoe crab and other ' living fossils ' stayed much the same while other creatures continue to evolve alongside them? Why are there so many gaps in the fossil record? How did the elephant get its trunk?
John Maynard Smith , Stephen Jay Gould and Ted Steele examine these and some other intriguing puzzles of evolution that still worry biologists today. From the Central American jungle to a Welsh lead mine; the cliffs of Beachy Head to the Henry VII chapel in Westminster, the film looks for some of the answers and asks if there is a serious alternative to Darwinism.
