Life and Death
This montage of clips from Leningrad film-makers over the last 50 years is shown as part of BBC2's Leningrad series. Newsreel and propaganda films are brought together with documentaries made under glasnost. A journalist interviews a convict bleeding to death after a prison shoot-out and a doctor describes the most popular form of suicide, hanging.
Meanwhile, children strive for freedom through ice-skating, and teenagers get their kicks from motorbikes while their parents seek solace in religion.
And at 10.20pm 600 Seconds
Another edition of Leningrad's news show. In January 1991, while the rest of the world prepares for war in the Gulf, charismatic television journalist Alexander Nevzorov finds dead bodies and tests bullet-proof vests.
