Each spring, as the sea-ice in the Bering Strait starts to crack open, groups of mighty Bowhead Whales begin a long migration towards their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic Ocean. This century, however, few people have seen a Bowhead, for the whaling industry hunted them close to extinction 90 years ago.
In 1973 a Canadian expedition set out by helicopter and sledge across the vast, jumbled ice-fields with the hope of filming and recording the Bowhead from close quarters. But they had to find them first...
