Geraldo's Navy

on BBC Radio 2

Just after the Second
World War, American jazz artists like
Charlie Parker , Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie were creating a new 'bebop' sound. In order to hear it, young British jazz musicians worked their passage to New York, playing in the dance bands on the great liners. On the Queen Mary, band members were booked by band leader Geraido. Thus Geraido's Navy was born.
Benny Green introduces the memories of Ian Cameron , Cyril Collins , John Dankworth ,
Ray Davis , Laurie Holloway , Peter Ind , Ivor Raymond , Ronnie Scott and Bruce Turner.
