The ancient forests of Belarus are the last reminder of how Northern Europe once looked. In the vast wilderness of the Naliboki forest, where thousands of Jews lived off the land after escaping the Nazis. Mears embarks on an emotionally draining experience in which he tracks wolves and bison, raids ants nests for larvae, and is shown how to weave a pair of lime-bark shoes by a 70-year-old forester.
