The action of the play takes place In and around the Memorial Chapel at Crockitt, a small Hampshire village.

Noah is a gentle man whose three score years and ten have been spent in the open air. He has been a gardener, and glad of it: "It's been a good, rich life. There's money to be made in town, but a sight less peace of mind to its getting and spending." These his declining years are being spent in one of the two almshouses which flank the chapel, built as a war memorial, twenty-five years ago. The anniversary of its opening is to be marked by a visit from the Bishop and on Noah's birthday. This happy coincidence is, he thinks, worthy of a gesture as magnificent as he can possibly make it. This touching play tells the story of Noah's offering and of the way in which it is received.
