The Art of Surviving
Narrated by Gary Watson Brazil's north east has been described as a region of perpetual calamity. Almost continuous drought, and a history of famine dating back 200 years, have produced in the people a determination to survive - whatever the odds. Their extraordinary ingenuity led to a new phrase being adopted to describe their way of life - ' The Technology of Survival'. It means making a living from whatever comes easily to hand: clay, stone - even rubbish - bottles, jars, cans, motor tyres - even dud electric light bulbs, are re-cycled to live again - but in a totally unexpected way.
