Intimate Relations
What makes marriage so popular? What special reward makes us continue to seek a long-term relationship with another when the chances of failure are so high?
In America researchers have been attempting to identify our underlying needs for intimacy and some key rules for enhancing it. By observing and questioning hundreds of couples, married and divorced, they have pin-pointed the emotional pitfalls that have become dominant causes of marital breakdown, and shown how couples can avoid these mistakes and make intimacy the basis of a stable relationship. Their studies have direct relevance to Britain, where this year one in every three marriages will end in divorce. Narrator Ian Holm
