Barred for Life
Is the zoo an endangered species? A new
five-part series - four reports followed by a debate - examines the past, present and future role of zoos, beginning with the horror stories of Europe's worst examples.
Executive producer
Grant Mansfield explains the background to the films: "When London Zoo came within a whisker of closing it wasn'tjust a case of one zoo in crisis. How can zoos justify their existence and remain commercially viable?"
Mansfield stresses that the series is not anti-zoo. "The best are engaged in very important work. With the films, our follow-up programme and Radio Times readers' involvement, we want to stimulate debate on the industry." " you want to make your opinions known, turn to page 36 for details.
