Walk On By: the Story of Popular Song

on BBC Two England

The penultimate programme from the eight-part series that tracks the evolution of popular music.
Soundtrack. Broadway and Hollywood musicals have produced some of the greatest songs of all time, and the fortunes of many turgid shows and uninspiring films have been transformed by a hit tune. Tonight's programme examines the history of the show tune, from Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein to Tim Rice, Andrew Lloyd Webber and, finally, Disney, which in recent years has brought about the renaissance of the big movie song.
The stories behind such classic songs as "Night and Day",
"Over the Rainbow", "My Funny Valentine", "Somewhere", "Cabaret", "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Stayin' Alive" are told by, among others, Stephen Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, Tim Rice, Georgio Moroder, Robin Gibb and Alan Menken. Narrated by Clive Owen.
