The Costains of Arbory
Throughout this year the Manx people have been celebrating 1,000 years of Tynwald, the worlds oldest continuous parliament, set up by the Vikings. One of Mann s distinctive families, descended from the Vikings, was inspired by these events to delve into its own roots. The Costains, centred in the parish of Arbory, in the south of the island, drew up a massive 30-foot-long family tree and by contacting relatives at home and abroad, soon raised the £1,000 needed to sponsor a family shield aboard Odin's Raven, the Viking ship specially built for a commemorative voyage from Norway to the Isle of Man.
Brian Trueman looks at the strength of family feeling that binds together farmers butchers, a psychiatrist, a computer analyst and a ship's engineer - all proud of the name Costain.
