John Huston 's faithful version of Carson McCullers' ornate, yet rigorous novel, has a distinguished cast headed by Brando as the homosexual Major Penderton. His clipped, almost mannered, portrait beautifully conveys the inner tensions of the man whose obsession leads to the film's tragic climax.
