Many of the problems which beset mathematics teaching today can be blamed on the educational structure-on the hierarchy of examinations and syllabuses. Yet teachers need not wait for the promised land: they can do much to remedy matters within the present structure. But if we want to alter the structure, to achieve a lasting solution, we must be sure of our aims.
