A series investigating intriguing tales behind important works of art. The Raft of the Medusa Theodore Gericault 's painting was based on a true story of shipwreck and cannibalism. But why he painted it is a mystery. Was it love or guilt or madness or idealism.... or something else? Andrew Graham-Dixon goes to France to meet a group known as "Gericault's madmen", who think they know the answer.
