Claude Chabrol's Le Boucher

on BBC Two England

starring
Stephane Audran Jean Yanne
After 15 years away, Popaul returns to his Perigord home town to inherit his father's butcher's shop. At a summer wedding he falls in love with the schoolmistress, Helene, but their tentative courtship is troubled by the news that a young girl in a neighbouring village has been murdered.
Claude Chabrol 's sensitive study of the psychology of murder, a masterpiece in the Hitchcock tradition, is widely felt to be his finest film, and is the first in a short season of Chabrol films.
