The composer William Mathias studied under me at the Royal Academy of Music, and though his work is basically traditional, it is of a strongly individual character. He tells me that his Laudi, though the title might suggest otherwise, is mainly a quiet, reflective piece. David Wilde, the soloist in the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1, is a very fine young pianist whose career I have followed with interest.'
