A Pattern of Building
Written and presented by Alec Clifton-Taylor
'You'll forgive my chronic lack of expertise', sighs Alec Clifton-Taylor as he nails a brick tile to a wooden batten, 'but this is the much discussed "mathematical" tile, oddly named but the speciality here. It comes in different colours, red, white and black, It looks like a brick but isn't and was designed in the Georgian period to give old timber-framed buildings the fashionable brick look.'
Lewes, with its castle and fine houses spilling down the hill, is built mainly of flint from the chalk downs. In addition, there is tile and brick to provide, says Alec Clifton-Taylor, 'an incomparable legacy in a magnificent Downland setting'.
