Horizon: Black Man - White Science

on BBC Two England

Horizon - man and science today

If you are brought up in an African or Asian village with an intense and absolutely serious belief in magic, witches, demons, and the whole complex paraphernalia of a spirit world, are you ever going to break away from all this irrationality and accept the disciplined logic of modern science?

In tonight's Horizon Africans and Asians discuss the effect that traditional upbringing has on their subsequent intellectual development. Many Africans and Asians have made major contributions to scientific thought; 'Black Man-White Science' is concerned to show that this requires from them not just intellectual effort, but also a major social and cultural effort which is not expected of Western scientists.

"The underdeveloped countries want from us our science more than they want our politics or our religion; we are happy to give it to them, but for some it is not an easy gift to receive."
