The New Masters: Head Over Heels

on BBC Two England

Marc Chagall, one of the great individuals of 20th-century painting, is now 84. His unique talent for expressing the feeling of the heart in images of poetic power is matched by an unrivalled command of colour.

This film, subtitled Head Over Heels, is set in and around the artist's studio in St Paul de Vence in France. It tells the story of a man, born in a small Jewish community in Tsarist Russia, who has lived through two World Wars, a Revolution and the rebirth of the Jewish Nation itself. Chagall talks of both the past and future and is seen absorbed in the painting of a large picture which symbolises his love of all the charms of life.
