Mystery and Adventure
"Every concert is an adventure, and how its programme comes about is often a mystery." So says the winner of the 1997 Umberto Micheli piano competition, Aleksandar Madzar. He certainly presents a dazzling and unusual programme tonight, including one of the peaks of the virtuoso piano repertoire in Ravel's dark and incandescent triptych Gaspard de la Nuit. Piers Lane meets the young Yugoslavian pianist and introduces a recital he gave last month in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank, in which he plays Gaspard alongside music by Berg, Scarlatti and Berio.
