Towering overall was the German offensive of Gorlice-Tarnow, in which Russia lost two million men. Britain, France and new ally Italy made little progress - but the end of the year brought a ray of hope. The Allied conference at Chantilly decided on the strategy for 1916: simultaneous attacks on the Central Powers.
