Young Billy Casper lives with his mother and stepbrother on a council estate in a northern industrial town. At school he is bored and unresponsive until one day, he gets the chance to go birds' nesting, finds a kestrel's nest and takes one of the fledglings. Billy's life suddenly takes on a new meaning.
