The cost of bananas is a question that is dividing Europe. Germany wants a free market with lower prices, whereas Britain is happy to pay more. But for the growers, it's a matter of life and death. While the former British island of St Lucia faces economic crisis, the environment in "banana republics", such as Costa Rica and Honduras, dominated by giant American fruit companies, has been damaged in the search for the perfect banana.
