Chamber Music: In Nomine

on Third Programme

View in Radio Times

Ralph Downes (organ)
The Deller Consort: Eileen McLoughlin, Alfred Deller, Gerald English, Eric Barnes and Maurice Bevan
The London Consort of Viols: Harry Danks, Stanley Wootton, Sylvia Putterill, Desmond Dupre, Henry Revell, Robert Donington
William B. Coates, who has arranged these programmes, writes: "The most important form of English instrumental music before the Fantasy, and one not used in any other country, was the 'In Nomine', of which more than 170 examples, written between 1540 and 1680, survive. The 'In Nomine', the riddle of whose name has only recently been solved, is based on a fixed theme played in long notes round which the other parts weave a rich contrapuntal texture. The pieces vary greatly in mood, length, and difficulty, and may well become a rich addition to the chamber musician's repertory."
