Christchurch, New Zealand in the fifties: two 14-year-old girls, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, develop a close relationship based on a love of fantasy, Mario Lanza and novel-writing. Their burgeoning sexuality and fertile imaginations lead them to create a magical kingdom peopled by idols and lovers.
