40 Minutes

on BBC Two England

Times Remembered
In Radio Times for
1 October 1981 the billing for a new documentary strand called 40 Minutes read: "A series of films portraying issues, institutions and individuals".
Thirteen years and programmes later the series finally ends with this review of 31 of its top stories and memorable moments.
Among tonight's clips are the moving stories of Alison, the disabled girl with a speech impediment who triumphed over her handicaps and married a vicar, and the English housewife who tried to find out what happened to her Jewish mother during the Holocaust.
Also featured is a scene from Home from the Hill, which followed how Colonel Hilary Hook coped with moving to Britain after a lifetime in Africa - many will remember his parting shots at his chandelier. And another memorable moment included in this retrospective is from Whose House Is It Anyway when a furious Rochdale man delivered a down to earth message to his council as they evicted him from his home.
