Art in Africa has flourished in the Gold Coast, in the Ivory Coast, and particularly in Nigeria. This programme examines the ancient tradition of African art, and the effect which Western culture has had on its development. It pays tribute to the influence of Meyerowitz and Murray in their efforts to encourage and restore a high tradition. It includes illustrations of sculpture and painting taken from the past and present, and a modern African sculptor, Ben Enwonwu, gives a demonstration of his carving techniques.
The programme ends with a sculptor's dance by masked Nigerian dancers, accompanied by traditional music.
