Horizon: What's So Big About Us?

on BBC Two England

The Pygmies were discovered by the West at the beginning of this century. It was found they were not half-man, half-monkey after all and, to prove it, were brought to England to grace society weddings. Documentaries of the 30s and 40s reinforced already popular misconceptions (some of those films are shown here).

Today, anthropologists know more about Pygmies than ever before. But the Pygmies are on the verge of extinction, forced into 'civilisation' no longer by the white man but by the black.

This is the first - and probably the last - chance to see, in their traditional environment, the world's most extraordinary people.
