Bunuel: That Obscure Object of Desire

on BBC Two England

Starring Fernando Rey, Carole Bouquet, Angela Molina

The Paris train is leaving Seville. A girl runs down the platform. To the consternation of his fellow-passengers, a middle-aged Frenchman leans out and empties a bucket of water over her. Then, feeling some explanation is required, he tells the story of his passion for Conchita...

After nearly 50 years of film-making, Bunuel's last film is as fresh and compelling as his first. The desirable Conchita is played by two actresses who alternately fire and quench the ardour of the hapless Mathieu, who is so obsessed with his pursuit of the unattainable virgin as to be oblivious of the terrorist outrages that follow him.
