Royal Heritage: 2: The Tudors

on BBC Two England

The Story of Britain's Royal Builders and Collectors
Told in ten parts by Huw Wheldon

The Tudors reigned over one of the most remarkable Periods of this nation's history. It was a century when the language itself, no less than the buildings, the music and the artefacts, moved from the medieval into the modern world. The Court was the centre of patronage in all the arts and the age was dominated by three outstanding monarchs: Henry VII, the founder of the dynasty; Henry VIII, probably the most gifted king ever to sit upon the throne; and Elizabeth I, the extraordinary daughter of an extraordinary father. Some of the glories of the Royal Collection savoured by Sir Huw Wheldon: the Portraits of Holbein, the miniatures and jewels, and the magnificent buildings, including the Palaces of St James and Hampton Court.
