The 10,000-Year Test
Can anyone predict the future for the next 10,000 years? A mass of scientists in the Nevada desert are trying to. America has chosen to bury all its most lethal high-level radioactive waste there, under Yucca Mountain - if scientists can prove that the waste there would cause no more than
1,000 deaths over the next 10,000 years. That means working out the probability of everything that could happen to the mountain, and the surrounding population.
No one has ever had to predict 10,000 years into the future. The scientists at Yucca
Mountain have had to resort to some strange fortune-tellers - desert pack rats, and rocks which 'eat' radioactivity - to find out if it is possible. Written and produced by BETTINA LERNER
