Nuclear fusion has been heralded as the power of the future. The promise of clean, affordable energy that will never run out has made it a holy grail for many scientists. Now successful trials in this country and plans for a giant international experimental reactor, have raised their hopes. But they will have to persuade governments to foot the bill and counter critics who maintain that fusion can never be practical.
