The fighting on the streets in Newham, in London's East
End, is not just among young gangs. Old people and young children are attacked simply because they are black. Some have died, and many have been injured. The Newham Monitoring Project argues that police, schools and local authorities have not done enough. So black people have taken to defending themselves.
