Army Lives

on BBC Two England

A series of programmes that look past the barrack gates at family life in the army. Tonight, a look at how couples have to adapt to the demands made by military rank.
After 23 years in the ranks, Regimental Sergeant Major Jeff is to become a Lieutenant. From being the most senior soldier he will become one of the most junior officers. His wife Chris is nervous of the officers' wives she has always addressed formally. But far from feeling superior, Vanessa, the Commanding Officer's wife, feels inadequate. She's not qualified for the unpaid social work required of her. Jane, the wife of Tony the new RSM, knows he will not be popular - he's the battalion's disciplinarian.
