Radley College has a reputation for producing first-class oarsmen and race-winning crews. The school's commitment to preserving this reputation is huge, both in time and in money. But 79 is not a vintage year. As the day of the prestigious National Schools Regatta approaches, the Radley First VIII coach is a worried man. His crew is not fast enough.

But deliverance is at hand. An Old Radleian arrives at the College looking for a job. He is no less than ex-Olympic oarsman Tim Crooks, and his expertise could just tilt the balance.
