Documentary series that focuses on issues concerning the Asian community.
In February of this year, two Pakistani Christians, one only 14 years old, were sentenced to death under the country's draconian blasphemy laws. Originally three people had been charged, but one was shot dead by an unidentified gunman while on bail. The two survivors were freed by a court in Lahore and had to be smuggled out of Pakistan to Europe to escape the vengeance of Islamic extremists. East reveals how death sentences, murders and lynchings in the name of Islam have brought the blasphemy laws into question. Used by some Muslim fanatics as an excuse to persecute minorities and settle scores between sects, are they are hindering Pakistan's bid to be regarded as a liberal Islamic state?
