Nurse Elizabeth Gray comes to the Norths' house in Shropshire to nurse Oliver who has lost a leg and who has a serious heart condition. He is a difficult patient, but then this is a difficult household. His married sister Heather is being courted by an R.A.F. Officer and is dreading her husband's return from the Middle East and also dreading a visit from her eccentric mother-in-law, Lady Sandys. In addition there is Vi, another sister, who is mad about farming. Nurse Gray needs all her patience and all her tact to handle the situation.
