On 27 January 1990, a gala concert at the Barbican Hall in London celebrated the 75th birthday of one of this country's most outstanding musicians, clarinettist Jack Brymer. This programme traces his career from PE teacher to principal clarinet in Sir Thomas Beecham 's
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, seen in rehearsal in some rare archive footage. The distinctive 'Brymer sound' is discussed by John Dankworth , Norman Del Mar ,
Margaret Foot and Emma Johnson. The music includes a complete performance of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. Also taking part are the London Symphony Orchestra, the New Philharmonia Orchestra and the Aeolian String Quartet. Producer Ron Isted
