Life is starting to look up for Marcus (Freddie Annobil-Dodoo) in Holding On

Holding On 9.30pm BBC2
After last week's revelation that disgraced taxman Shaun is brother to schizophrenic murderer Alan, the final episode of Tony Marchant's hard-edged drama is distinguished from what has gone before by its clarity of purpose. Scenes which see Shaun re-establishing contact with the family he deserted 12 years before carry great conviction. David Morrissey's compelling performance has been the one constant in a sea of shifting plotlines.
"Justice does come eventually," we're told, and it is played out in front of us. At last, we have a glimpse of London as a city rich in possibilities - good as well as bad. After the bleak journey we've been on, it's a relief to receive an implicit, optimistic message. And there's even hope for Phil Daniels's Gary, as he returns to his roots.
