Trevor Philpott reports on The Hospital: 2: The Sisters
Florence Nightingale is dead. Dedication doesn' buy the groceries or pay the rent.
This is the kind of talk we've been hearing from the militant members of the nursing profession throughout the year. The nurses are due to get a new pay deal any day now.
But the most vital need is not to increase the pay of students and juniors but to offer sufficient rewards to career nurses, the ones who are prepared to spend years in the profession and upon whom the harmony and efficiency of the hospitals rests so heavily.
The Sisters is a study of five such nurses; the remarkable demands made upon them by the modern hospital, modern equipment and modern consultants; and of their attitude to their work and to their patients.
