Concluding the two-part drama set in 19th century Edinburgh.
When Bell and his young protege Conan Doyle are asked to diagnose what is wrong with Carlyle's wife, Bell decides that it would be inappropriate to reveal that she is ill with syphilis. This deceit angers the idealistic Conan Doyle, who decides to make some enquiries into Carlyle, which reveal a social rot that may well permeate the highest echelons of Edinburgh society. Contains strong images.
