"The Broken Wicket": the men realise that the women are bored with cricket!
Everyone knows that cricket is the native preoccupation of the Englishman during summer months, and at the little Yorkshire village of Slackering this enthusiasm is on both a national and a local scale. As one regular at 'The Broken Wicket' (rallying-point for cricketers) puts it: "Cricket's what the place was made for!" And excitement at present among the men of Slackering (with Major Trim and George Sykes, the publican, well to the fore) turns on whether they can again win the Improbables League Shield Competition; if so, it becomes the Slackering Shield. But one advisedly specifies the men: for the women of Slackering (the Major's lady and Effie Sykes to the fore!) are at last on the point of revolting against the tyranny of the game.
