6/6. Retired Husband Syndrome. It's estimated that some 60 per cent of older Japanese women suffer from physical ilness caused by the stress of looking after their demanding, retired spouses. In extreme cases this has led to suicide. In a candid insight into the lives of couples affected by this growing phenomenon, women reflect on lives blighted by loneliness and emotional neglect.
