Eight films on eight centuries of British Architecture
4: A Sense of Proportion Written and narrated by John Julius Norwich
Moderation, self-confidence, and a sense of proportion - these were the values and virtues of the 18th century that found expression in the style of architecture known as Palladian.
In this film JOHN JULIUS NORWICH examines the architecture of the mid-eighteenth century against the philosophical and aesthetic ideas of the Age of Reason, both in Italy where Andrea Palladio had designed villas and churches in the 16th century, and in England where his ideas were faithfully echoed two centuries later.
