Eye on Research: 1: The Sacred Mushroom

on BBC Television

Raymond Baxter reports from a laboratory of a pharmaceutical company in Basle, Switzerland.
For centuries the Indians of southern Mexico have been eating a species of mushroom they call 'God's flesh', and after eating it see visions and prophesy. Recently a Swiss chemist has extracted the active principle of the mushroom which is now used for the treatment of certain cases of neurosis.
Tonight's programme tells how this extraordinary substance was isolated and the power it has of causing hallucinations in almost anyone who takes it.
