The bully and coward of Tom Brown's Rugby schooldays, Harry Flashman, is now a much-decorated Captain of the Queen's Hussars. Escaping from a police raid on a house of dubious repute. Flashman encounters the notorious adventuress Lola Montez and soon finds himself an unwitting pawn in Bismarck's plans to unite Germany.
