BBC Proms 1994

on BBC One London

Viennese Night is one of the Proms' most popular traditions. Richard Baker introduces highlights of last night's concert from the Royal Albert Hall, featuring a sparkling selection of waltzes, polkas and marches from the Strauss family, plus some operetta treats sung by soprano Felicity Lott.

The Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Most directs the London Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is musical director. "I was born in Linz, not Vienna, but the Viennese waltz actually comes from Linz so I think you can say the music is in my blood," he says. "When I was 16 I spent the summer playing the fiddle in a light-music band. I got through nearly the whole repertoire then, so choosing the programme for tonight has been as difficult as selecting my 'desert island discs'."
