David Dimbleby was a young reporter when Rhodesia made its Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965 and, as events unfolded between 1967 and 1968, he made three Panorama films on the subject. In this three-part series he tells the inside story of white Rhodesia's revolt against the British crown and the long battle to bring full democracy to an independent Zimbabwe.
This first programme relives the dramatic days leading up to the UDI through the recollections of key players, including the Rhodesian leader Ian Smith (who recalls how he locked horns with the former British prime minister Harold Wilson and threatened to break away from Britain). Also featured in the series are Robert Mugabe, Bishop Muzorewa, General Peter Walls, Kenneth Kaunda, Pik Botha and Lord Carrington.
