Grigori Alexandrov Battleship Potemkin is a milestone in world cinema and - despite the attempts of various governments to ban what was regarded as a subversive film - was his international breakthrough. Intolerable conditions on the Battleship Potemkin lead to unrest and mutiny, supported by the citizens of Odessa. The raising of the red flag - handpainted for the premiere in 1925 - is being shown in colour tonight for the first time on television.
