America at the Racial Crossroads
This second series, in eight parts, takes the story of America's civil rights movement from the non-violent campaigns of the first decade (1955-65) to the turbulent second phase of the following years. 1: The Time Has Come (1964-66) Martin Luther King 's commitment to non-violence was challenged by a radical movement that began in the northern cities where Malcolm X spread the teaching of the Nation of Islam. Black Muslims were determined to claim their civil rights, and the black panther, an emblem chosen for a campaign in the south, became the symbol for black activists.
